Proceedings of Enhancement of Rain Retrieval from Radar

چکیده

Since many years Doppler radar profilers are known as valuable tools to retrieve profiles of rain rate and further rain parameters (e.g. Wakasugi et al. (1986)). Applying well established relations for terminal fall velocity, shape and backscatter cross section of rain drops allows to derive rain rate without empirical assumptions. For calculating the backscatter cross section, the flattening of rain drops (see e.g. Pruppacher and Klett (1997)) constitutes a nonnegligible error source.

P2b.1 Constrained Gamma Drop Size Model for Polarimetric Radar Rain Estimation: Justification and Development

Accurate rain estimation from radar measurements has been a difficult task due to the variation of raindrop size distribution (DSD), lack of accurate axis ratio model, measurement error, clutter, and so forth. Previously, rain estimation from weather radars has been largely dependent upon empirical relations such as R-Z relations. The development of polarimetric radar makes accurate rain DSD re...

Improved rain rate and drop size retrievals from airborne Doppler radar

Satellite remote sensing of rain is important for quantifying the hydrological cycle, atmospheric energy budget, and cloud and precipitation processes; however, radar retrievals of rain rate are sensitive to assumptions about the raindrop size distribution. The upcoming EarthCARE satellite will feature a 94 GHz Doppler radar alongside lidar and radiometer instruments, presenting opportunities f...

QUANTITATIVE PRECIPITATION AND HYDROMETEOR CONTENT ESTIMATION IN TROPICAL CYCLONES FROM REMOTE SENSING OBSERVATIONS by

Quantitative rain rate and hydrometeor content retrievals from spaceborne remote sensing measurements in tropical cyclones over ocean and related microphysics issues are discussed in this study. An emission-based rainfall rate algorithm for the Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) hurricane research aircraft WP-3D is validat...

Simulation of SeaWinds Measurements in the Presence of Rain Using Collocated TRMM PR Data

The scatterometer SeaWinds on QuikSCAT measures ocean winds via the relationship between the wind and the normalized radar backscatter cross-section (σ◦) from the ocean surface. Scattering and attenuation from falling rain droplets along with ocean surface perturbations due to rain change the backscatter signature of the waves induced by near-surface winds. A simple model incorporates the effec...

Effect of Non-Uniform Beam-filling on TRMM PR Rainfall Measurements

We investigate effects of non-uniform beam-filling on TRMM PR rain retrieval using data from the NASAIJPL Airborne Rain MApping Radar (ARMAR) acquired during TOGA COARE in early 1993. Our approach is to simulate TRMM PR observations using the ARMAR data and compare the radar observable and retrieved rain rate from the simulated PR data with those corresponding to the high-resolution radar measu...
